Michael Duncan
Michael Duncan.

Michael "Mike" Duncan was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Hugh Duncan of Ceralvo and the grandson of Edgar Irles and Pecola Duncan of Rockport. Mike's grandparents lived on the Ceralvo Road between Rockport and Ceralvo on the high ridge just past the old iron bridge. Their house was less than two miles from the Rockport High School. Mike Duncan was born in 1956 at Fort Knox and soon after, his parents moved back to Ceralvo. As a young boy, growing up and living in Ceralvo, Mike started school in Centertown. He was able to finish his elementary education at Centertown before his parents moved to Louisville. Mike finished High School at Fern Creek.

Soon after High School, Mike was living in the state of Washington, and in 1973 joined the navy at Everett, Washington. He was sent to boot camp at San Diego. After the completion of Navy Basic Training, "Boot Camp", Mike was being processed and was scheduled to go to Aviation Machinist Training School at Memphis, Tennessee. After receiving orders to go to Memphis and just before he was scheduled to ship out from San Diego, he contracted Meningitis. A hospital stay in San Diego for the treatment of Meningitis ended Mike's military career. In January of 1974, Mike was released from the hospital and given an Honorable Discharge. The Meningitis had taken its' toil on Mike, enough so that he was placed on a disability list and was awarded a monthly disability payment. Although his military career had ended and he would forever be weakened, he considers himself lucky to have been able to survive. Many died in the 1973 Meningitis outbreak.

For the next several years, in his weakened condition, Michael worked at different jobs and continued his formal education. In 2005 he secured a job as a Chinese College English Teacher and was sent to China near the Vietnam-China border. Living there and teaching the young Chinese students, he fell in love with the people and especially one young woman. He married this young Chinese woman and he and Li have been married now for 13 years.

Recently, Mike's service history caught up with him and a MRI in December of 2019 showed that he has IIH, Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension. He and Li moved to Gainesville, Florida to be near a VA Hospital so that he could continue his treatment for this service connected problem.

Thanks Michael, for your service to our country. Good luck on your VA Treatment.
